CREW .22 SHOOTING SPORTS TEAM

The Crew .22 shooting team, sponsored by the Unaka Rod and Gun Club, is organized as a Venturing Crew under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America, but affiliated with the National Rifle Association (NRA). It is a shooting sports team for young people ages 14 to 21, male or female. The team members are shooting .22 rifles to earn awards under the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. Shotgun shooting is also available and, later, it is expected that the team will take up pistol shooting. The Crew has participated in NRA Postal Match programs for both rifle and shotgun.

As part of the NRA Qualification Program, participants are taught to shoot a rifle safely, using the Benchrest, Prone, Standing, Kneeling and Sitting positions. The Qualification Program involves shooting 10 shots in each of the Prone, Standing and Kneeling positions and obtaining at least a minimum score. After doing this several times, a shooting award is earned. These awards are Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman First Class, Sharpshooter, Expert and Distinguished Expert, with the number of repetitions and minimum score becoming higher.

Interested youth are invited to come to a meeting of this Crew. The meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 3:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The registration fee is $35.00, $15.00 of which is used to register the participant with the Boy Scouts of America. The other $10.00 is used to purchase ammunition and targets. (If you are unable to pay the $35.00, please come and talk to us anyway).

At the meeting, you will meet the adult club members who will be available to help improve your shooting skills and ensure your safety while on the range. The Boy Scouts require that a NRA Approved Rifle Instructor be present whenever you are on the range. The club has individuals who have this certification and other individuals who have NRA approved instructional skills. Participants may use their own .22 rifle, or one that the club makes available. Crew .22 will furnish the .22 caliber ammunition.

Crew .22 Schedule For 2011

The .22 Rifle qualification shooting will be conducted from 3:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month, March through October.

We will be shooting to earn the NRA Qualification awards (Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman First Class, Sharpshooter, Expert and Distinguished Expert).

We expect to shoot at least one round of three positions (Prone, Standing and Kneeling), 10 shots in each position, at each meeting after the initial training is completed.

TNSCTP SHOTGUN SHOOTING TEAM

 

The Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program (TNSCTP) shotgun shooting team, sponsored by the Unaka Rod and Gun Club, is organized under the auspices of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). It is also affiliated with the National Rifle Association (NRA). It is a trap and skeet shotgun shooting team for young people ages 10 to 18, male and female. The team members also shoot to earn awards under the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. The Team has fielded a shotgun shooting team shooting skeet and trap for the last two years.

 

Interested youth are invited to come to a meeting of this Team. The meetings are held each Saturday March through June, and then the first and third Saturdays July through October from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  The fee to register with the TNSCTP is $30.00. The registration year is from October through September of the following year. The cut-off for registration is April 30th.

 

Participants should provide their own shotgun. 12 gauge is the best, but 20 gauge is acceptable. The Unaka Rod & Gun Club has a limited number of 20 gauge shotguns which Team members may use. Participants will also need to purchase their clay targets and ammunition. The Club charges $2.50 for each round of 25 clay targets, which is the Club’s cost. The Team is able to purchase ammunition at wholesale cost from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation at $5.00 per box of 25 shells (the cost is the same for 12 gauge and 20 gauge). Thus, the cost for each round of trap will be $7.50, or $15.00 for the typical two round weekly practice.

 

At the meeting, you will meet the adult club members who will be available to help improve your shooting skills and ensure your safety while on the range. The Team has two NRA Shotgun Coaches, and numerous Club members who are expert shotgun shooters. The Team participated in the Regional Trap Shooting Match held at the Hog Heaven Range near White Pine for the last two years, finishing well both times. Two years ago, the Team participated in the State Championships held near Clarksville, TN. The Team plans to participate in these matches again, and also the SCTP Nationals, held in Sparta IL.

2011 TNSCTP Schedule

Shotgun practice shooting will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on each  Saturday of March, April and May. After May, practice will take place on the first and third Saturdays of each month through October at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

We expect to shoot at least two rounds of Trap at each meeting. One round is 25 shots, or one box of shells. There is a requirement to participate in the Regional Shooting Meet that participants have fired 600 shots (24 boxes) in 2011. ____________________________________________________________________________________
