TNSCTP SHOTGUN SHOOTING TEAM

The Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program (TNSCTP) shotgun shooting team, sponsored by the Unaka Rod and Gun Club, is organized under the auspices of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). It is a Trap and Skeet shotgun shooting team for young people ages 10 to 18, male and female.

Interested youth are invited to come to a meeting of the Unaka Shooters. The team sign-up period begins Saturday, March 2, 2019 and ends on April 1st. The practices are held each Saturday March through June (with optional practices on Thursday nights).  The fee to register with the TNSCTP is $50.00.

Participants should provide their own shotgun. 12 gauge is the best, but 20 gauge is acceptable. The team has guns that may be used if someone would like to try but doesn’t own a gun.  Participants will also need to purchase their clay targets and ammunition. The Club charges $3.00 for each round of 25 clay targets, which is a special rate for the Team. Ammunition is also available for purchase at the gun club.  A weekly practice is typically at least 2 rounds depending on how many disciplines participating in. (Costs= $3.00 per round plus your ammunition).

At the meeting, you will meet the adult club members and coaches who will be available to help improve shooting skills and ensure safety while on the range. The Team has several NRA Shotgun Coaches, and numerous Club members who are expert shotgun shooters. The Team has participated in the Trap Regional Championships in White Pine, TN,  Regional Skeet Championships in Oak Ridge, TN, State Championships in Nashville, TN and National Championships in Marengo, OH.

We have had success in the SCTP program.  In 2016, our team had 2 National SCTP Champions in skeet (one varsity skeet with 200 straight and one collegiate skeet) and a doubles skeet champion at Jr. World.  In 2015, we had a participant place 3rd  in National SCTP skeet competition while their skeet team placed 10th in the nation competing against over 30 states.  We have also produced two state champions in skeet: one JV champion in 2013 and one varsity champion in 2015.  We had a JV State Champion Skeet Team in 2013. We have also produced several All-State Team Members.     Our trap teams have also achieved success.  In 2018, Unaka Shooters had 2nd place Rookie Female in our State Competition. In 2013, we had a regional champion JV trap team, Regional High Over All JV Male, and Regional High Over all JV Female.  In 2014, we had an intermediate team place first as well as a  varsity shooter placed High Over All Female.  We also have had Rookie High Over All Female as well as several team awards.

Most of these athletes had never competed with a shotgun or had even fired a gun before. Whether you want to compete at a high level or just learn how to safely shoot a shotgun, this program has something for everyone at any level.  We look forward to safely teaching youth shooting sports where they can also learn discipline, sportsmanship and leadership.

If you have questions, call Mark McInturff, Head Coach at 928-7428. We are looking forward to meeting you.
