Unaka Rod and Gun Club Youth Rifle Training Program

 The Unaka Rod and Gun Club will be presenting a Basic Rifle Training Program for youth between the ages of 10 and 18, beginning in March.  The program will have two parts. The first part of the program will be the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course taught by an NRA Certified Rifle Instructor.  Additionally, NRA Certified Range Safety Officers will provide individual shooting instruction and guidance.  The goal of the Basic Rifle Shooting Course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a rifle safely. Certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of this part of the program.

The second part of the program will follow the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program for Rimfire Rifle Qualification with the goal of progressively improving the skill and accuracy of the shooter.  There are several levels of qualifications in this program. Badges and Certificates will be awarded upon completion of each skill level.  The badges and certificates through Marksman are included in the cost of the course.  The class size is limited to 20 students.  Sign up prior to the first class is required to insure a place in the class.  The Basic Rifle Shooting Course will be conducted on the first and third Saturdays. (Course description - www.nrainstructors.org/CatalogInfo.aspx?cid=1) The cost of the class will be $100.00 and will include the use of single shot .22 rifles through both parts of the program, ammunition for the basic course, targets for the basic course, course materials and instruction for both parts of the program.  Ammunition for the second part of the course can be provided by the individual participant or purchased from the Club for $10.00 for 50 cartridges. Students are expected to comply with the rules concerning the safe handling of firearms at all times.

Our goal is teach the students to enjoy shooting and to progress in shooting skill and accuracy.  This course will not qualify the student to obtain a hunting license.  Those desiring a Tennessee hunting license will need to complete the Hunter Safety Course.
